Meet the Board

The Back Creek Christian School Board is an integral part of the successful functioning of our school. The members carry the responsibility of governing the school so that it will be a safe environment for students to mature spiritually, personally, and academically. We look forward to seeing the fruit of their hard work and dedication to our school.

Rick Clark, Board Chair

Rick and his wife Laura have 3 boys (Eric, Hudson, and Jeremy), all at BCCA.  Rick has been an active parent at the academy since 2008.  Rick and Laura have been members at StoneBridge Church Community (Presbyterian Church in America) since 2001, where they are small group leaders and Sunday school teachers.  Rick is employed as an IT Architect at IBM.  He has a BS from Bellevue University.

Janet Ballard, Head of School, Board Member

Janet’s life mission is to serve Jesus and expand his kingdom by teaching young minds of His love for them.  She has 2 daughters, Elizabeth and Rebekah, who are both BCCA graduates.  Janet earned her Ph.D. from Columbia International University in December 2017. As Head of School, her term limit coincides with her employment.

Ken Calhoun, Board Treasurer

Ken grew up in Charlotte.  He and his wife Jeannette have 3 children who all attended BCCA through 8th grade.  Jeannette has been on staff at BCCA for a number of years, and the family is very dedicated to the success of the Academy.  Ken and Jeannette are members of St. Matthew Catholic Church.  Ken has been a financial advisor since 1990 and is a partner in the Calhoun, Proud, & Shields Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors.  Outside of work Ken has been active in youth soccer, a sport he played and loved since childhood, and he carries a “D” license as a coach.  Ken graduated from James Madison University and received his MBA from Wake Forest.

Patti Faber, Board Member

Patti and her husband Dave joined Back Creek Presbyterian ARP in 2006, where they are involved with the Children’s Ministry and a Bible Study group, among other ministries.  Patti has been an Accountant at Arrowpoint Capital (formerly Royal Insurance) for more than 23 years.  Patti has a BS degree in Accounting from West Chester University and has been a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) for more than 20 years.

Steve Farnie, Board Member

Steve and his wife, Nancy have been married 42 years and raised 3 sons and 1 daughter who all live in the Charlotte area. The children attended Northside Christian Academy.  They currently have 5 grandchildren, one who has attended BCCA.  Steve is retired from Sonshine Construction Inc., which he started in 1983 and has passed on to his oldest son, Matthew.  Steve and Nancy have been members of Central Church of God for the past 28years.  Steve served as an elder and acted as the Church’s liaison to Beers Construction Company, which built the $5,000,000 youth facility.  Steve also served on the Board of the Mecklenburg County Republican Party for 10 years.

Matt Liebler, Board Member

Matt and his wife Jenny have three kids, Caroline, Matthew, and Mary Elizabeth.  Matt is partner at Reiferson Miller & Dee PLC whose practice primarily focuses on commercial real estate finance.  He regularly represents banks, loan servicers, agency lenders, life companies, institutional lenders, finance companies, investors and borrowers in commercial real estate transactions.  He is a graduate of Montreat College in Montreat, NC, and Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, VA.

Bill Schaffner, Board Member

Bill and his wife Wendy (a teacher at BCCA) have been married for 35 years and have raised two boys, Kevin (married and living in Orlando, FL) and Chris (married and living in Concord, NC). Bill attends Back Creek Presbyterian Church where he is an Elder, Small Group Leader, head of the Personnel Committee, and a singer with the Praise Team. A graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance, Bill has spent his entire career in the insurance industry. He is also Executive Director of the Job-Site Safety Institute, a non-profit organization focused on safety in the construction industry. Bill is an avid runner and sports fan.
